May 21 Protest Rallies

Thousands of people gathered on May 21 on the capital city Tbilisi’s main Freedom Square at a protest rally organized by the People’s Assembly, an opposition movement backed by ex-parliamentary speaker Nino Burjanadze. The rally was part of the People’s Assembly campaign to force President Saakashvili to resign through street protests. A simultaneous protest rally was held in Batumi, where protesters briefly clashed with police outside the local TV station’s office.
