Pre-Election Media Monitoring

Media monitoring, covering a period between May 6 and May 12, showed that Irakli Alasania, leader of Alliance for Georgia, received more coverage than other Tbilisi mayoral candidates on three TV stations (public broadcaster, Rustavi 2 and Kavkasia), while three other stations under monitoring (Imedi, Maestro and Real TV) allocated more airtime in their main news bulletins and selected talk shows to incumbent mayor, Gigi Ugulava.

Tone of coverage of both Ugulava and Alasania on national television stations was neutral, according to the monitoring. On Kavkasia and Maestro TVs Alasania had neutral tone of coverage, while Ugulava – neutral or negative. Zviad Dzidziguri, a mayoral candidate nominated by National Council, received more negative tone of coverage than any other candidate (Kavkasia and Maestro had neutral tone of his coverage), apparently attributed to an incident that occurred on May 7.

The monitoring covers main news bulletins and selected talk shows on three national television stations – public broadcaster’s First Channel; Rustavi 2 TV and Imedi TV and three Tbilisi-based stations, whose area of coverage is limited mainly with the capital city – Kavkasia TV; Maestro TV and Real TV.
