Bakradze Warns Public Officials Against Electoral Wrongdoings
Davit Bakradze, the parliamentary chairman, warned public officials that illegal interference in the electoral process would be “strictly punished.”
“I want to warn everyone, that any incorrect step and interference on the part of the public officials [in the electoral process] will be strictly punished and in [such cases] we will have to use all the measures stipulated by the law,” Bakradze said.
He called on inter-faction parliamentary group on elections to monitor possible cases of use of administrative resources in the pre-election campaign; he also welcomed a memorandum, which was signed by the Central Election Commission and election watchdog groups on April 8. The memorandum provides set of explanations of those provisions of the elelction code, which deal with the use of administrative resources. The memorandum aims at preventing double and different interpretation of these provisions by the authorities and the election watchdogs.
“We are interested in having free, competitive elections without violations. We all should spare no efforts to hold transparent and democratic elections,” Bakradze said.
