Russian MPs Condemn Demolition of WWII Memorial in Georgia
Russia’s lower house of the Parliament, the State Duma, passed a statement on December 25 condemning the demolition of a World War II memorial by the Georgian authorities in Kutaisi as “act of vandalism”.
It says that “after the failed aggression in August 2008 against the South Ossetian people, the regime in Tbilisi now tried to launch a war against the Georgian people and against our common history.”
“By such acts the Tbilisi regime, which was loudly declaring about its adherence to European values, put itself beyond the European civilization, roughly and cynically trampling the memories about heroism of its own people,” the statement says.
Davit Bakradze, the Georgian parliamentary chairman, said while commenting on the State Duma’s statement that if Russian lawmakers “would have better discuss the issue of those houses which were destroyed by them [during the August war] and the issue of those people who were displaced and now can’t return back to their homes.”
