Saakashvili on Media Freedom in Georgia
President Saakashvili said in an interview with CNN’s Connect the World, when asked about media freedom in Georgia: “We have twenty seven independent channels in Georgia; we have dozens of political talk shows everyday.”
“I think we are politicized society to the extent you won’t find in most of the eastern and central European countries and we welcome it,” he said.
In the same interview Saakashvili said when asked why Tbilisi decided to attack South Ossetia, that Georgia had to respond to Russia’s invading troops. He said the country faced two options: either to capitulate and stop existing or to resist.
“You don’t send flowers to invading troops… We had to react, we had to respond; we were shelled by Russia’s proxies for weeks and weeks, they were first ones to fire and then the Russian troops came in. We refused to surrender,” he said.
