Saakashvili in New York for UN General Assembly

President Saakashvili, accompanied by Foreign Minister, Grigol Vashadze, is will hold series of bilateral meetings in New York on a sideline of UN General Assembly (UNGA) before addressing the Assembly on September 24.

The President and Foreign Minister plan a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, on September 21, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.

On September 22, Foreign Minister Vashadze plans to meet with Daniel Fried, the U.S. Department of State’s special envoy for Guantanamo detainees’ issues. Fried visited Tbilisi in August and The Washington Post reported late last month that Georgia was among those countries with which the U.S. held “positive talks” on resettling of some of those Guantanamo detainees, who have been cleared for release. The Georgian officials decline to publicly discuss the matter.

In New York President Saakashvili and Foreign Minister Vashadze plan a meeting with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana.

Saakashvili will also meet with his counterparts from Turkmenistan, Finland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar.

Foreign Minster Vashadze plans bilateral meeting with his counterparts from Hungary, Cyprus, Austria, Bulgaria, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Slovenia, Slovakia and Democratic Republic of Congo. He will also participate in GUAM foreign ministerial summit (Moldova will be represented by its UN envoy).
