Quake Damages over 1,000 Houses in Racha

Earthquake, which hit Georgia’s western mountainous region of Racha overnight on September 8, damaged over 1,000 houses, according to the estimations made by the local authorities.

At least 400 families have been left homeless, as their houses were severely damaged or destroyed, according to the preliminary information.

According to the UN agencies operating in Georgia, only 44 out of 64 villages have been assessed so far and the information may change.   

No fatalities have been reported as a result of the earthquake with epicenter in Oni district of the Racha region.

UN agencies, with UNHCR (agency in charge of refugees) in the lead, got involved to provide the assistance, involving sending of tents, blankets, jerry cans and other non-food items to shelter the homeless.

Bo Asplund, an acting UN resident coordinator in Georgia, said around 6,000 Humanitarian Daily Rations will be distributed as an immediate food support to the affected population.
