Alasania Meets FM Vashadze

Irakli Alasania, leader of Our Georgia–Free Democrats, part of Alliance for Georgia, met with Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze on August 10.

The meeting is a follow up to a meeting with President Saakashvili in frames of National Security Council and similar meeting follow up meeting will take place with Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili on August 12.

Our Georgia–Free Democrats said in a statement that Alasania handed to the Foreign Minister the party’s document on its vision on “reactivation of work of the international organisations and efficient use of international security mechanisms with regards to the conflict zones in Georgia.”

At the upcoming meeting with the Interior Minister Alasania and lawmakers from the parliamentary minority, who will also participate in the meeting, plan to raise the issue of what the opposition says is politically-motivated arrests of opposition activists and also cases of attacks on opposition supporters and activists.

Mathew Bryza, an outgoing U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state, told journalists in Tbilisi on August 10 that it was a positive development that political discussions shifted from the streets back to reform agenda.

“It is time for serious people to conduct serious work on serious reforms; it seems like that’s beginning to happen now,” Bryza said.

He said upcoming meeting between Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili and some opposition leaders planned for August 12 was further step forward to that direction.

Bryza said the one of key issues to be discussed between the Interior Minister and the opposition leaders would be “reports of violence, which we anticipate will end, must end.”
