Russian Reports: ‘Defector’ Solider Went AWOL
A Russian soldier, Alexandr Glukhov, who Georgia said requested asylum in Tbilisi, has went AWOL from his military unit in Akhalgori, the Russian news agency, RIA Novosti, reported quoting an unnamed source from the Russian commission investigating the matter.
The Russian Defense Ministry has been denying that Glukhov deserted his unit in breakaway South Ossetia and instead claimed that he was abducted by the Georgian law enforcement officers and then pressured to make a televised request for asylum.
“Internal investigation has showed that Alexandr Glukhov has left his unit without permit. The reasons are yet to be clarified,” RIA Novosti reported quoting the source.
