EU Chief Monitor Meets Russian Military Commander
Hansjörg Haber, head of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM), met with deputy commander of the Russian land forces, Valery Yevnevich, on December 2.
The meeting, which took place in the village of Ergneti on the South Ossetian administrative border, aimed at discussing efforts to put in place a joint law enforcement mechanism between all the sides along the borderline, EUMM said in a statement.
The sides have agreed during the recent talks in Geneva on November 19 to develop day-to-day incident prevention and management mechanisms.
“Both sides [chief of EU monitoring mission and Russian military commander] expressed their concerns about the situation in the areas adjacent to the South Ossetian boundary line and stressed the importance of full compliance with the agreements of 12 August and 8 September,” EUMM said. “It was agreed that further meetings will take place, with a view to including representatives from the Georgian Government and the de facto South Ossetian authorities.”
