Bakradze: Georgia Wants Continuity in EU Policy Towards Conflicts

Davit Bakradze, the Georgian Parliamentary Chairman, said in Riga on November 20, that Tbilisi hoped European Union would remain “persistent” in pressing Russia for fully complying with the ceasefire commitments to pull out troops to the position held prior to the outbreak of the August war.

“Key in resolving this issue is EU’s continuous policy and the key word, which will help us to resolve this issue, is continuity and the persistence on the EU’s side,” Bakradze said after meeting with Latvian Foreign Minister, Maris Riekstins. “If EU is persistent, if EU is continuous in its policy vis-à-vis conflict resolution, I am quite sure and I do believe, that Russia will have to comply with its obligations and Russia will have to agree to restore status quo ante of August 7.

“And this continuity is very much secured by the active position of our friends within the EU and Latvia plays a very constructive and very positive role with that regard,” Bakradze added.

The Latvian Foreign Minister said at the joint news conference that Russia was not in full compliance with its ceasefire commitments.
