Georgian FM Slams Russian Defense Minister’s Remarks

Georgian Foreign Minister Eka Tkeshelashvili said that Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov’s recent remarks on Georgia’s NATO integration amounted to “threatening” not only Georgia, but to Europe as well.

“We are concerned about the Georgian leadership’s efforts to increase its military potential and to drag the country into NATO. This action can provoke more serious conflict than we saw in August,” Serdyukov said in Ankara on November 18.

“Russia does not hesitate not only to threaten Georgia, but also to threaten the Europe,” Tkeshelashvili told reporters in Tbilisi on November 19.

She said that “unfortunately” there were “no positive signs of Russia’s policy becoming more constructive.”

“But I am absolutely sure that no matter how hard Russia may try to re-established itself as the Soviet Union, it will certainly fail to do so,” Tkeshelashvili added.
