Russian MPs Ratify Treaties with Sokhumi, Tskhinvali

Russia’s lower house of Parliament, the State Duma, ratified on October 29 comprehensive treaties on partnership and cooperation with breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia, both of which Moscow has recognized as independent states.

The treaties envisage mutual assistance, including in the military sphere.

Grigory Karasin, the Russian deputy foreign minister, told Russian lawmakers on October 29 that 3,800 troops would be permanently deployed in each of the breakaway regions.
