Russia May Keep Consulate in Georgia
Russia is discussing the possibility of keeping its consulate in Tbilisi, a Russian Foreign Ministry official told Interfax news agency on September 30.
“Until this issue is resolved, some of our diplomatic and technical staff will stay in the Georgian capital,” Igor Lyakin-Frolov said.
He also said that most Russian diplomats, including Ambassador Vyacheslav Kovalenko, would leave Georgia on September 30.
Russia shut down its embassy and consulate in Tbilisi on September 3 after Georgia formally notified Moscow of its decision to cut diplomatic ties with Russia.
Georgia also closed its embassy in Moscow, but the Georgian Foreign Ministry said it would maintain a consulate there with a consul, two vice-consuls and technical staff.
