Kazakhstan Drops Grain Terminal Plans in Poti

Kazakh Agriculture Minister Akylbek Kurishbayev told lawmakers that Astana had dropped plans to build a grain terminal in Georgia’s port town of Poti, the Kazakh official news agency, Kazinform, reported on September 22.

The agriculture minister cited “the current situation in Georgia,” after the August war with Russia, as the reason for the decision.

Kazakhstan, one of the main foreign investors in Georgia, signed a deal with the Georgian government in June 2007 on the construction of a grain terminal in Poti. It was announced at the time that Kazakhstan planned to invest USD 10 million in the construction of the terminal.
