‘Do not Start Exploring for Resources’ in Abkhazia – Rice Tells Russia

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on September 18 that there should be no permanent Russian military bases in Abkhazia or South Ossetia and Russia should not explore for resources in the breakaway regions.

“One of the things that Russia could do to show that it understands that a different course is necessary would be not to try to alter the status quo in Abkhazia and South Ossetia,” she said while speaking at German Marshall Fund in Washington.

“So no permanent military bases. Don’t start exploring for resources in territory that is clearly within the international boundaries of a member-state of the United Nations.”
