UN Team Visits Conflict-Affected Areas

A UN humanitarian assessment mission will visit areas affected by the August war, including breakaway South Ossetia. The mission will also travel to Moscow and Tbilisi.

The trip, scheduled from September 17 to September 20, aims to gain "first-hand knowledge of the humanitarian and human rights situations and needs on the ground, including the position of those displaced by the conflict and other vulnerable groups,” according to a written statement issued by the UN secretary-general’s spokesperson.

The statement reads that the mission “will visit South Ossetia and Tbilisi.” In the statements and press releases issued by the UN in early August, when referring to South Ossetia, the following wording was used: “South Ossetia, Georgia” or “South Ossetia (Georgia).”

The results of the mission will feed into the revision of the USD 59 million humanitarian flash appeal launched on 18 August, the statement says.

A separate “broader fact-finding mission to the region” is also planned, it said.
