Abkhazia, S.Ossetia Call for Recognition

Parliament in breakaway Abkhazia has appealed to the Russian President, legislative and executive government to recognize its independence on August 21, the Abkhaz news agency, Apsnipress, reported.

The Abkhaz Parliament has made several similar appeals to the Russian Federation several times in the past.

Apsnipress also reported, that up to 50,000 people gathered on August 21 in the center of the breakaway region’s capital, Sokhumi, at a government-organized rally calling for the Abkhazia’s recognition.

Also on August 21 a similar rally was held in the center of the breakaway South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali.

The rally was followed by an outdoor classical concert in the Tskhinvali center performed by the St Petersburg’s Marinsky Orchestra, led by conductor Valery Gergiev, who is also a principle conductor at the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Meanwhile, the Council of Federation, the upper house of the Russia’s Parliament, plans to discuss appeals by South Ossetia and Abkhazia for recognition on August 25, the Russian news agencies reported.
