Burjanadze ‘Alarmed’ over Lack of Media Freedom
Nino Burjanadze, ex-parliamentary speaker and president of the Foundation for Democracy and Development (FDD), said the state of media freedom in Georgia was “alarming.”
“The current trends in the Georgian media landscape are alarming,” Burjanadze said in a written statement released by her Foundation. “Serious question marks have been raised in connection with the freedom of media [in Georgia], without which not only democracy development, but development in general would be impossible.”
She said that the FDD was doing “active work” to re-enforce media freedom. Koba Liklikadze, a journalist of the Georgian service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), will head up the Foundation’s efforts in the area, Burjanadze said. Liklikadze is a member of the FDD board of advisors.
“I hope the public will become more interested in the matter [media freedom],” Burjanadze added.
