Efforts Underway to Arrange Medvedev-Saakashvili Talks

A meeting between the Georgian and Russian president will be held, but it should be “prepared thoroughly” in order to have concrete results, Grigol Vashadze, the Georgian deputy foreign minister, said on June 23.

Vashadze is currently visiting Moscow, where along with other issues he is discussing the preparation of the top-level talks.

“The meeting should be prepared thoroughly. We have no right to hold one more protocol meeting [the two presidents met in St. Petersburg on June 6 on the sidelines of an informal CIS summit],” he told Georgian journalists in Moscow. “The most important thing is that the presidents should achieve concrete results.”

The exact date of the meeting is unknown, but it is expected to be sometime this summer.

Giga Bokeria, another deputy foreign minister, said on June 23 that Tbilisi wanted to achieve a breakthrough in relations with Russia.

“We want to find a common language with Russia and we have a very flexible position. We are doing our best to ensure that this breakthrough is not problematic for Russia’s image. We have no plans to put Russia in an awkward situation. But any breakthrough, any progress needs will from both sides,” Bokeria said.
