Georgian MPs Slam Moscow Mayor Remarks on Breakaway Regions

Some lawmaker from the ruling party said on June 9 Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov should be declared persona non grata for his remarks on Georgia’s breakaway regions.

Luzhkov said on June 7 that Tbilisi should recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to resolve the conflicts there.

“This is a hostile statement and Luzhkov should know that it has a price,” MP Nika Rurua said. “He should be declared an undesired person.”

“He [Luzhkov] is a mouthpiece of our enemies sitting in the Kremlin. Mr. Luzhkov will never be a welcomed guest in Georgia,” MP Irakli Kavtaradze said.

The Georgian authorities have as of yet given no indication of their intention vis-a-vis the MPs’ proposal.

The Ukrainian authorities declared Luzhkov a persona non grata after he called for “the return” of Sevastopol to Russia.
