Ruling Party in Big Lead – CEC
With over 35% of votes counted results show the ruling party is close to secure constitutional majority in the new parliament.
The Central Election Commission started posting on its website results coming from polling stations after midnight.
Results from 979 polling stations – out of total 3,558 – were posted by 11am local time on Thursday and the number keeps increasing gradually.
The ruling party leads with 63%, followed by the nine-party opposition bloc with 13.2%; the Christian-Democratic Party – 8.4%; the Labor Party – 6.1%; the Republican Party – 3.4%; other seven parties and election blocs received 1% of less each.
Clearing the 5% threshold is necessary to gain any of the 75 seats allocated through the proportional, party-list system.
Remaining 75 seats are contested between majoritarian MP candidates in 75 single-mandate constituencies, including ten in Tbilisi.
The ruling party is also expected to take most of the majoritarian MP seats in the new 150-member parliament.
Voter turnout, according to the Central Election Commission, was 55% meaning that 1,905,960 voters have cast their ballots out of total 3,465,736.
The opposition said that election were held in “intimidation, pressure and violence” exerted by the authorities.
