UN to Restore Georgia’s Right to Vote

The Fifth Committee of the UN, which deals with budgetary and administrative issues, has submitted recommendations to the UN General Assembly to restore Georgia’s right to vote at the UN, the Georgian Foreign Ministry reported on October 11.

“We hope, that these recommendations will be approved by the General Assembly without any remarks or corrections,” Deputy Foreign Minister Giorgi Gomiashvili said at a news briefing on October 11.

Georgia was deprived of the right to vote at the UN on June 30 due to membership fee arrears. Georgia must annually transfer USD 766,299 to the UN budget between 2004-2013 to cover the existing debt. The Fifth Committee’s green light to restore Georgia’s right to vote was possible only after the Georgian government paid its debt for 2004.

If the General Assembly approves the proposition, Georgia will restore its right to vote until June 30, 2005.
