Opposition Slams Government for ‘Failed South Ossetian Operation’

MP Davit Gamkrelidze, leader of the Rightist Opposition coalition, which is the only opposition faction in the Georgian Parliament, accused the authorities of carrying out “unsuccessful” military operation in breakaway South Ossetian in August.
 
On August 19 the Georgian forces captures strategic heights overlooking the separatists’ capital Tskhinvali; however later on the same day Georgian non-peacekeeping forces launched withdrawal from the conflict zone, as ordered by President Mikheil Saakashvili, in a bid, as the President put it, “to give a last chance for peace.”
 
MP Davit Gamkrelidze said at a news briefing that he will demand to hold the parliamentary debates over this issue.

“I want the Georgian authorities to answer following questions: how much was spent on this unsuccessful campaign? How many people died during the South Ossetian crisis? Was this operation agreed with the United States?” MP Gamkrelidze said. 
 
“We demand to launch parliamentary debates over this issue, in order to find out whom to blame for this failed operation: the President, the government, or particular ministers,” he added.
 
The first sitting of the autumn session of the Parliament is scheduled to be convened for September 14.
