NGOs to Monitor Situation in Prisons

A 21-member group, consisting of representatives from the non-governmental and civil society sectors of Georgia, will be allowed to monitor the situation in prisons in terms of protection of human rights there.


According to the Decree of the President of Georgia,  the group will have the right to enter prisons at any time without any permits.


?The group will submit a quarterly report to Justice Minister Giorgi Papuashvili regarding the situation in prisons as well as a report to the President of Georgia twice a year,? Tina Khidasheli, a legal expert and chief of the Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA), told Civil Georgia.


The group consists of representatives from the Georgian Young Lawyers Association, the UN Association of Georgia, the Liberty Institute, Article 42 of the Constitution, etc.
