S. Ossetian Official: Seized Ammunition “Private”

According to the Russian Interfax news agency, de facto Deputy Defense Minister of South Ossetia Ibrahim Gassiev stated that the ammunition seized yesterday at the Georgian checkpoint belong to “private persons.”

Gassiev was quoted by Interfax as saying “otherwise they would not have been transported in a mini-van and without guards”.

The Georgian Interior Minister Irakli Okruashvili reported on July 18 that a vehicle carrying ammunition, including Russian man-portable anti-tank guided missile system “Fagot” (NATO reporting name “Spigot”) was stopped and confiscated near the Georgian village of Kekhvi and then brought to the village of Achabeti, in South Ossetia. Okruashvili reported that a “confrontation” occured with the guards escorting the vehicle.
