Annan Hails Release of Russian Officers

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan welcomed the peaceful resolution of tensions resulting from the recent arrests of Russian officers in Georgia and called on all sides ?to engage constructively to address existing problems.? 

?The Secretary-General is pleased that Georgia and the Russian Federation have been able to resolve the issue of the recent arrest of Russian officers in Georgia in a peaceful and constructive manner,? the UN Secretary General?s Spokesman said in a statement issued on October 3.

Kofi Annan also appreciated the efforts undertaken by the OSCE Chairman-in Office Karel de Gucht to help defuse tensions.

The statement goes on to say that ?The Secretary-General expresses the hope that all parties concerned will refrain from statements or actions that could affect stability in the region.?
