U.S. Welcomes Release of Russian Officers
U.S. Department of State deputy spokesman Tom Casey said on October 2 that Washington welcomes Georgia?s decision ?to return the four Russians that were arrested last week and we very much appreciate the role that was played by the Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE to facilitate that transfer
?[The United States] encourage the Government of Russia and the Government of Georgia to continue to take steps to deescalate the tensions in the days and weeks ahead? The U.S. role in any situation like this is to simply do that, to try and call for a peaceful resolution of differences between neighbors. We certainly want to see Georgia have good relations with Russia, and Russia have good relations with Georgia,? Casey said.
When asked about reports over meeting between the Russian President and Abkhaz and South Ossetian leaders, Casey responded: ?what we see as important is that there be a resolution of these differences and in a way that recognizes the territorial integrity of Georgia. Any conversations that help promote that effort are obviously positive. Any ones that don’t would not be helpful.?
