Georgia ‘Positive’ on Latvian Leader’s UN Secretary-General Bid

The Georgian Foreign Ministry said on September 19 that it welcomes Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga’s bid for the post of U.N. Secretary-General with “understanding and a positive stance.”

The issue was discussed at a meeting between Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Giorgi Manjgaladze and Latvian Charge d’Affaires in Georgia Egons Neimanis on September 19, according to the Georgian Foreign Ministry.

“The sides have agreed to continue consultations over the issue,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.

The UN Security Council will recommend a candidate among seven people running for the position and the 192-member General Assembly, which gathered in New York, will have to approve the choice.

Russia and China reportedly oppose the Latvian President’s candidacy.
