U.S. Condemns Transdnestria Referendum
In a statement issued on September 18 the U.S. Department of State said it does not recognize the independence referendum held on Sunday in Moldova?s breakaway region of Transdnestria.
?As the international community has made clear, Transnistria is a part of Moldova, and yesterday?s efforts by the Transnistrian regime should not be recognized as anything other than an attempt to destabilize Moldova,? the statement reads.
Earlier the Russian Foreign Ministry called on western powers not to ignore the referendum results.
A similar referendum is planned in Georgia?s breakaway region of South Ossetia for November 12.
Secessionist authorities in South Ossetia said on September 18 that the referendum in Transdnestria should be an example for them.
