Tbilisi, Tskhinvali Exchange Accusations over Shooting
Authorities in breakaway South Ossetia reported that the Georgian side targeted the southern outskirts of Tskhinvali with mortar shelling overnight on August 26.
“The shelling stopped only after return fire [from the South Ossetia side], but it resumed again after a while. The situation stabilized only after the arrival of peacekeeping forces,” the South Ossetian Press and Information Committee reported.
But Georgian media sources, citing the Georgian authorities, reported that the South Ossetian side opened fire in the direction of the Georgian village of Ergneti, which is in the south of the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali.
