Russia’s New Ambassador Meets Deputy Foreign Minister

Russia’s new Ambassador to Georgia, Viacheslav Kovalenko, met with Georgian First Deputy Foreign Minister Valery Chechelashvili and presented copies of his credentials on August 16.


At the meeting, the Russian and Georgian diplomats also discussed issues currently topping bilateral relations between the two countries, the Georgian Foreign Ministry reported.

“My major task will be restoration and strengthening of friendly and mutually beneficial relations between the two sovereign states of Russia and Georgia,” Viacheslav Kovalenko told RIA Novosti news agency on August 16.


Viacheslav Kovalenko, who has replaced Vladimir Chkhikvishvili, was a director of the second department of CIS countries at the Russian Foreign Ministry. Kovalenko has been working for the Russian Foreign Ministry since 1972, and served in Belarus from 1992-1997 and 1999-2003.
