Tbilisi Calls for Scrapping Russian-led S.Ossetia Peace Format
In a statement issued on August 7, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said that the existing Russian-led negotiating and peacekeeping arrangements for the South Ossetian conflict ?have exhausted their resources? and it is necessary to replace them on the basis of principles submitted to the international community by the Georgian side.
?These principles envisage, in particular, changing the existing formats of negotiations and Joint Peacekeeping Forces, placing within the scope of their responsibility the entire Tskhinvali region, and simultaneously with the economic rehabilitation of the conflict zone, defining the status of the Tskhinvali region within the Georgian state,? the Georgian Foreign Ministry says.
In the statement the Georgian Foreign Ministry also condemned a recent ?provocation? in the South Ossetian conflict zone, when three Georgian policemen were injured in an attack on August 7.
?Self-evidently, such acts aim to provoke the Georgian side into taking a range of counter-steps… It provides convincing evidence that Russian peacekeepers and their commanders are incapable and have no will to establish elementary order in the Tskhinvali district,? the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.
