Abkhaz Leader Comments on Kodori Operation
Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh said on July 26 that the Abkhaz side will open fire if Georgian troops enter even ?one meter? into Abkhaz-controlled territory.
The Abkhaz media reported earlier that Abkhaz troops are concentrated near the Kodori Gorge.
?If Georgian troops come near the Abkhaz [administrative] border, which is controlled by us, this will be the first stage of a serious conflict,? Sergey Bagapsh told Russian television reporters.
Georgian officials have ruled out that the ongoing police operation against rebel militias in Georgian-administered upper Kodori Gorge will grow into a large-scale military confrontation.
Russian peacekeeping troops? checkpoints separate the Georgian-administered upper Kodori Gorge and the Abkhaz-controlled lower Kodori gorge.
