Bagapsh Again Rejects Tbilisi’s Proposals
Sergey Bagapsh, the Abkhaz leader, said Tbilisi’s recent proposals were not acceptable as Sokhumi had already made its choice in favor of independence.
“I have already voiced my position about Mikheil Saakashvili’s proposals. They are unacceptable for us. Issues related with Abkhazia’s independence is not for discussion,” Bagapsh told Interfax news agency on April 13. “We don’t even pay attention to those discussions in Tbilisi. We have already made our choice.”
President Saakashvili instructed cabinet members on April 12 to elaborate a comprehensive peace plan based on proposals unveiled by him last month, involving a joint free economic zone, Abkhaz representation in central government and parliament and an Abkhaz vice-president with the right to veto Abkhaz-related decisions.
Bagapsh also said that economic cooperation was only possible between Georgia and Abkhazia as “between two independent states.”
