Georgia to Send at least 350 Troops to Afghanistan

Georgia is to send at least 350 servicemen to contribute to NATO-led forces in Afghanistan in late August or early September, Davit Bakradze, the Georgian foreign minister, told Reuters on March 31.

He said Georgia was offering to send 120 servicemen to support the French contingent in Kabul; 200 to accompany the Dutch in the southern province of Uruzgan and smaller units would be deployed alongside U.S. troops.

Last March President Saakashvili said that Georgia planned to send 100 servicemen to Afghanistan, but no deployment has been made so far.

Fifty soldiers and officers from the Georgian 16th Mountain Battalion were stationed in Afghanistan for 100 days in 2004 alongside German forces.
