Saakashvili: Proposed System on Majoritarian MPs ‘Fair’
President Saakashvili has publicly backed the proposed rule on electing 75 majoritarian MPs, which was endorsed by Parliament with its second hearing on March 11.
He said that the system of electing one majoritarian lawmaker in each of the 75 single-mandate constituencies was “fair.”
“If any [political] party thinks that a system different from this one would put it in a better position, this is not a good enough reason to call for unrest in the country. I think this is irresponsible and is not serious,” he said, referring to opposition calls for so-called ‘regional proportional lists’ for electing 50 majoritarian MPs.
Saakashvili also called on the opposition to resume dialogue. “I think we all should learn how to talk not only through loudspeakers [at protest rallies], but we should simply continue talking with each other and we should all sit at the negotiating table to resolve all the issues based on the interests of our country and our people. This is the only way and there is no alternative. We have no way without each other; we should find a common language,” he added.
