Burjanadze Expects ‘appropriate response’ from Russian Parliament
Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said she expected that the Russian State Duma, lower house of Parliament, would respond appropriately to appeals by Abkhaz and South Ossetian officials to recognize their independence.
On March 13 the Russian State Duma will hold parliamentary hearings on conflict resolution in the CIS, with South Ossetian, Abkhaz and Transdnestrian appeals for recognition also due for consideration.
“Naturally, we will wait for their assessment and our response will be measured accordingly,” Burjanadze told reporters on February 27.
She reiterated that Kosovo could not be compared to Abkhazia or South Ossetia.
“These are two different issues, although Russia always tries to find some connection,” she added.
RIA Novosti news agency quoted Alexei Ostrovsky, chairman of the Russian State Duma committee for CIS affairs, as saying on February 26 that South Ossetian and Abkhaz parliamentarians would participate in the parliamentary hearings.
The separatist leaders renewed their calls for recognition following Kosovo’s declaration of independence.
