Ruling Party MP: Opposition Tries to Maintain ‘Protest Momentum’

The opposition’s 17-point memorandum is designed to maintain momentum ahead of the parliamentary elections, rather than rectify electoral shortcomings, Kote Gabashvili, a ruling party lawmaker, said on January 30.

“Maintaining a protest wave is the driving force behind the opposition and not a desire to improve something,” MP Gabashvili told Rustavi 2 TV. “The tone in which the [opposition’s] demands are put forth is absolutely incomprehensible to me.”

MP Irina Kurdadze, a spokesperson for Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze, said on January 30 that Burjanadze was “familiarizing” herself with the memorandum. “The Parliamentary Chairperson is always willing to engage in dialogue,” she added.
