Local Observer Groups Critical of Post-Election Process

The Central Election Commission (CEC) approved the final vote tally of the January 5 election without addressing “significant concerns and violations” during the entire electoral process, three local election observer organizations said in a joint statement on January 14.

International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy (ISFED), Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA) and Transparency International-Georgia said in the statement that they disagreed with an assessment made by CEC Chairman Levan Tarkhnishvili, in which he said the election was “maximally democratic, maximally transparent and maximally fair.”

The three groups said that although their election day assessment was mainly positive, post election processes were marred by numerous violations. They said their complaints had been unfairly and arbitrarily dismissed by the election administrations on procedural grounds.

“[We] call on all state institutions involved in the election process to act responsibly and show their commitment to the rule of law and the will of Georgian voters,” the joint statement reads. “Today the responsibility for safeguarding a stable environment in the country falls first upon the CEC and then upon the judiciary, executive government and political parties.”
