Saakashvili Speaks of Relations with Russia
Mikheil Saakashvili reiterated on January 12 that Georgia wanted to improve relations with Russia.
He said he would welcome if President Putin were to attend his presidential inauguration planned for January 20 or 21.
?We hope very much that Mr. Putin will find time to come to Georgia. We can only welcome it. We think that our relations should be unfrozen,? Saakashvili said at a press conference, which was also attended by PM Lado Gurgenidze. ?In such cold weather, which is so unusual for Georgia, we should start heating up our relations, because [current bilateral relation] are not normal.?
?I think that one of the major regrets I have from my first term is the damaged relations with Russia. I will not go into details about who is to blame. It?s more important now to settle this problem. Each side has its own answer as to who is guilty.?
On January 8 Saakashvili expressed the hope that dialogue could be resumed with Russia and that both countries could ?start relations from a blank page.?
