CEC: Saakashvili Narrowly Avoiding Run-Off

About 80% of counted votes show candidate Mikheil Saakashvili is narrowly avoiding a second round.

By Monday evening, January 7, the Central Election Commission (CEC) website was listing results from 2,998 polling stations out of a total 3,512, according to which Saakashvili had 52% and Levan Gachechiladze – 25%.

The nine-party opposition coalition, which claims irregularities in the vote counting process and which insists on the necessity of a second round, is due to make a statement later today.
