State-Funded Internship Program Launched
Thousands of people rushed on December 5 to eleven registration points in Tbilisi in an attempt to get enlisted in a state-funded internship program.
The new employment program involves three-month internships in private businesses for unemployed people, with the state paying GEL 600 to each participant over the period. A total of 100,000 people are expected to go through the program, officials say.
The first day of registration was marred by an incident involving the death of a 55-year-old woman in a long queue at one of the registration points. Davit Tkeshelashvili, the healthcare minister, said the woman had been suffering from health problems. He said the state would pay funeral expenses.
