Boney M Wins Hearts and Minds in S.Ossetia

Nineteen seventies disco band Boney M. will perform in the Georgian-administered village of Tamarasheni in the South Ossetian conflict zone on October 13.

Tamarasheni is less than a kilometer from the secessionist-controlled capital of Tskhinvali.

Boney M., which enjoyed its greatest popularity in the 1970s and on into the eighties, was, like ABBA, a huge western music success in the then Soviet Union. Although the band split two decades ago, Marcia Barrett, the band’s singer, will lead out part of the orginal line up in Tamarasheni on Saturday night.

The band’s presence in the conflict zone, paid for by the Georgian government, is designed to win the hearts and minds of the local population.
