Competition Announced for CEC Chairman’s Position
Two positions, the chairmanship of the Central Election Commission (CEC) and membership of the CEC board, have been opened to public competition.
A relevant decree was signed by President Saakashvili on September 10.
The position of the CEC chairman, which is of crucial importance ahead of the 2008 parliamentary and presidential elections, has opened up as the former chairman, Guram Chalagashvili, has become the chairman of the Georgian National Energy Regulatory Commission.
Candidates for the vacant positions can submit applications over a two-week period starting on September 10. At least two candidates for each position will be shortlisted and submitted to the president, who will then make nominations for parliamentary approval.
Candidates seeking to become the CEC chairman must be certified election administration officials without any political party affiliation.
Despite the open competition, Levan Tarkhnishvili, the current chairman of the Board of the Georgian Public Broadcaster, is widely expected to become the new CEC chairman.
Tarkhnishvili has already sought a license to become a certified electoral official.
