Tbilisi Condemns Moscow’s Plans to Invest in Abkhazia

Moscow Municipality’s decision to sign an agreement on economic cooperation with the secessionist authorities of Abkhazia is “an unfriendly” move, the Office of the Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues said on July 11.

It said that the agreement contradicts a decision by CIS leaders in 1996, which bans trade and economic ties with Sokhumi, without the prior agreement of Tbilisi.

Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh and Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov signed the agreement on economic cooperation in the Russian capital on July 9.

“We have chosen a number of investment projects in Abkhazia, particularly in the energy and healthcare sectors,” Luzhkov said at the signing ceremony.
