Russian Peacekeepers Released

Georgian police released two Russian peacekeepers in Zugdidi after having detained them briefly, Georgian media sources reported on July 10.

The two soldiers, part of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in the Abkhaz conflict zone, were arrested after they had ?illegally set up a checkpoint? on a major road on the outskirts of Zugdidi. According to reports, they were stopping motorists and demanding to see papers.

Georgian Interior Ministry sources said the ?soldiers were drunk.? They were handed over at the Russian peacekeepers? headquarters.
