Protesters Disperse as Water Supply Resumes

Georgian villagers blocking a major road leading to the breakaway South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali dispersed late on July 4, after irrigation water supply had been resumed.

Secessionist authorities in Tskhinvali characterized the resumption as “a demonstration of goodwill.”

Tskhinvali itself, however, is still suffering from water shortage, according to the South Ossetian Press and Information Committee.

It said on July 4 that pipeline capacity was down by 30%, because of damage.

The Georgian side, however, maintains that it has repaired the pipeline running through the Georgian villages to the north of Tskhinvali. It blamed the South Ossetians themselves for the continued shortages, alleging they hadn’t supplied the pipeline with sufficient water from a sluice in Java, in the north of the region.
