Parliament Approves Law on Property Legalization

New legislation protecting property privatized before April 2007 has been introduced.

Parliament approved with 132 votes to five on its third and final hearing on June 22 the presidential-initiated draft law. Because the law will not apply to disputed properties, which are currently under investigation, some opposition parties opposed the law, demanding all-inclusive legislation.

The authorities, however, claim there are only a few dozen cases currently under review. Parliament has undertaken a commitment to post a list of these cases on its website.

Opposition lawmakers also complained that the new law will not return properties seized since 2004.
