Calls for Opposition Candidate as Chief State Auditor
The opposition Democratic Front parliamentary faction has demanded in Parliament on April 24 that an opposition candidate be nominated for the position of the chairman of the Chamber of Control – the main state audit agency.
However, Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said that the majority would select a candidate whose impartiality was beyond doubt.
The position has been vacant since the death of former chairman of the Chamber of Control Zurab Soselia in March.
Irakli Kovzanadze, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Budgetary and Financial Issues, Temur Murgulia, Head of the Parliament?s budgetary office and Levan Choladze, Deputy Foreign Minister are all considered likely contenders for the post.
According to the parliamentary regulations, the Parliamentary Chairperson must nominate someone for parliamentary consideration. The position has a five year term.
